Tips for Tractor Implement Maintenance
Taking proper care of your tractor implements will help them perform better and last longer. Use the following tractor implement maintenance tips to get started.
Consult the Owner's Manual
The first step is seeing what the manufacturer suggests. There may be recommendations about which tasks to do, how often to do them, and certain products to use or avoid.
Beyond the recommended maintenance tasks, it's also important to look up the limitations of the tractor implement. Overloading or overworking the attachment can drastically speed up wear and cause damage. It's also unsafe! Always stay within the limits established by the manufacturer- they exist for a reason.
Keep Records On Your Tractor Implements
Many people own more than one tractor implement, which can make keeping track of regular maintenance tasks a challenge. Some maintenance tasks happen after a certain number of months while some happen after so many hours of usage. Create a record keeping system that helps you stay on top of the maintenance needs for each tractor implement.
It's also helpful to see which tractor implements you have not used in a long time. All of that time in storage can take its toll. You may need to glance over the implement for condensation buildup, pests, and other potential damage.
Use the Proper Power Take Off Shaft Length
The Power Take Off (PTO) shaft plays an important role. It gets power from the tractor to the implement so that the attachment can do its job. When the shaft is set to the wrong length, it can cause problems.
If it is set too long, it can damage the tractor's internal PTO drive or the implement clutch and gearbox. This can void the tractor's warranty and lead to expensive repairs.
If it is set too short, the PTO shaft could disconnect from the implement. This can also cause expensive damage.
When you use a given implement, make sure to use the right PTO shaft length. This simple preventative maintenance can help you avoid a big repair bill.
Grease the PTO Shaft
If you don't regularly grease the PTO shaft, a range of problems can occur. The universal joints can fail, the shaft can seize, and the implement's gearbox can be destroyed. A recommended timeline is to grease after 20 hours of usage.
Inspect the Clutch
If the clutch is loose, there can be extra strain placed on the wear discs. This can wear them out faster and you'll need to replace them sooner. If the clutch is too tight, it can lead to gearbox or PTO failure. Check that the clutch tension is correct before using the tractor implement.
Inspect the Nuts, Bolts, and Washers
There is a normal amount of vibration that occurs with tractor implement use. But this vibration can cause the nuts, bolts, and washers to get loosened. Remember to check these every so often and tighten as needed.
