How To Wash Your Tractor
Whether they’re used for farm work or construction, tractors tend to get dirty easily. While washing your tractor over and over might seem inconvenient, a monthly cleaning can go a long way towards discouraging long-term corrosion and encouraging overall performance. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can get your tractor as clean as possible, this guide from Rivera’s Machinery, Inc. has more details.
1. Remove Debris
Tractors are like a magnet for dirt clods and other big chunks of debris. Try blowing off some of the leaves, grass, mud, and twigs with a leaf blower. Pay particular attention to the undercarriage, because this area tends to be difficult to clean.
2. Rinse & Wash Exterior
There are two ways to wash a tractor. The first is to take a bucket of soapy water and a sponge and wipe the equipment down. Cleaning a tractor this way can be arduous, but it’s more than worth it if you want to be very thorough in your cleaning. We recommend rinsing as you go to help avoid soap build-up. A scrub brush can also be used to make cleaning your tractor’s nooks and crannies easier. If your tractor’s tires are caked with muck, try breaking them down with a large auto brush.
If you want a less thorough but faster cleaning, use a pressure washer. If you choose to use a pressure washer, clean top to bottom. This will prevent dirt water from seeping down into areas that you’ve already cleaned. Pressure washers can damage delicate components, so don’t spray things like mirrors or sensors directly. You should also take steps to keep water out of the engine.
3. Dry and Apply Wax
Once you’re done washing your tractor, allow it to air dry or use an air compressor/leaf blower to get the water off. Once the tractor has fully dried, apply a wax coating to protect it. Don’t forget to buff the wax once you’re done applying it!
4. Wipe Down Interior
Once your tractor’s exterior has been washed, turn your attention to the interior. Wipe down the controls using a damp rag so that all traces of mud and dust are removed. Don’t forget to wipe down your seats and clean the floorboards using a shop vacuum.
